When I began my Martial Arts journey back in the Marine corps 1982-1988. I was looking for systems that would benefit me in battle situations. All in all, most claim to be the most effective system on the planet.
What I found back then is mostly the hard form systems were popular at the time. Not wanting to go in depth on each system, I have tried many of them in the past and present. I have come to the conclusion that all arts are connected.
Yes they all have different names but the true core and depth of the movements all have commonalities among them. As one instructor pointed out during a training the most important part in martial arts is to move. Now this can be taken in a thousand perspectives and dissected to its core. But the reality is in the truth of it. MOVE!!
Bruce Lee, R.I.P., mentions flow. I have to agree that having flow is key to martial arts. Also Truth in your art and your system. This brings me to Shihan Ken Smith of Advanced Martial Systems-Northwest. One of the last honest martial artist I know.
His training style is direct in his teaching and of tying the multiple systems together. Again not to pit one art against the other but here in his system of martial arts, you find truth in the form and flow. Having the ability to find the truth in it, as you’re doing it, is paramount to your learning journey.
You don’t pay for a belt or a title, you earn your education in the art by doing. And in that journey you may or may not reach your full potential (AKA black belt) or rank of instructor. If you are more about the journey than a title or a belt then you will truly appreciate the teachings of Shihan Ken Smith one of the last honest martial artists around.
I fully endorse Shihan Ken Smith and Adavnced Martial Systems-Northwest. And as I continue my journey, I know he is here to guide and teach me along the way.
